IF YOU KNOW WHAT IT IS YOU'RE PRIVILEGED; IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS YOU'RE PRIVILEGED.

2016

a mass-produced ceramic object with a title

The objects you recognize and know how to use tell which groups or social class you belong to. People who would recognize this object very probably belong to one or more privileged groups, even though they might or might not see themselves privileged: our own privilegedness is often invisible to us.

When we look at things around us, we can most often define them by their use; name them and categorize them. Coming across something that we can not define by its use is rare. In our usefulness-oriented world where most of things are defined and definable by their use, being able to enjoy moments of not-defining is a privilege.

When viewing the work, the audience can pick up the object to observe it.
